Gustav Mahler Symphony No 10

Left unfinished at the death of the composer, Gustav Mahler's Symphony No 10 has exerted an enormous fascination on musicologists as well as musicians. Whether fully orchestrated in specific passages, or a sole melody in others, there is one continuous line throughout the surviving manuscript pages. This is a 'recreation' of the work for chamber orchestra.

The final 5 minutes or so could melt the heart of a yeti Classical Music Sentinel, Jean-Yves Duperron (April 2019)

★★★★★ Arguably the most telling realisation and performance of this work from a most unexpected source Amazon, Stewart Crowe (April 2019)

First I was intrigued. After 5 minutes I was absorbed. By the end I was overwhelmed. By my 2nd listen I could barely imagine it any other way. #RecordOfTheWeek The Symphonist (April 2019)

However you hear the Tenth, you’ll hear it differently after experiencing this one. Gramophone, Peter Quantrill (May 2019)

It is a triumph! I’d argue that this realisation gets closer to Mahler’s increasing sense of anguish and ever developing musical language than anyone. […] the range of colours is vast, the musical impact profound and the sheer weight combined with translucency of sonority is enthralling. Amazon (May 2019)

Castelletti's first Scherzo is an upbeat romp […] Mahler's neuroses unfold on a smaller, less cluttered canvas; we're being whispered to rather than screamed at. The Arts Desk (June 2019)

Strikingly different […] a refreshing new view of Mahler’s final symphony BBC Music Magazine: No. 1 Orchestral Choice of the Month (July 2019, BBC Proms edition)

★★★★★ For once, the results justify the rhetoric Fanfare Magazine, Robert Markow (November 2019)

I would say that Castelletti’s edition is the one most likely to persist alongside the classic Cooke et al.Adventures in Music, Jari Kallio (review of performance with Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra/Susanna Mälkki, October 2020)

a genuine and meaningful attempt to get to the heart of Mahler’s score. Its revolutionary wealth of colours and sentiments are left powerfully exposed. The Clubmap (March 2021)

“...in this interpretation of the brilliant arrangement by the Maltese conductor and composer Michelle Castelletti […] pain, self-destruction, hopelessness and doomsday mood are more strongly felt than in recordings with large orchestra I have heard so far...” Pizzicato, Remy Franck (March 2021)

★★★★★ Brilliantly scored! [...] another 'must-have' for Mahler lovers! [...] By the end of this magnificent performance we are left emotionally wrung out! Amazon, Peter Bond (April 2021)

If you already love this work, you need to hear this disc. The Arts Desk, Graham Rickson (June 2021)

...if this is purgatory I feel free to commit umpteen non-mortal sins […] Most impressive is the last movement, which begins with terrifying drum thwacks, from which slowly emerges a divinely beautiful and moving flute solo, & from then on there is no doubt that Mahler 10 deserves a place in the repertoire, & that Ensemble Mini throws new light on it. The Spectator, Michael Tanner (June 2021)

the genius of Michelle Castelletti's realisation […] challenges the dogma of definitive interpretations; but her challenge reaches far beyond how Mahler is performed to confront the problem of definitive classical music. The Overgrown Path, Bob Shingleton (July 2021)

NOMINATED FOR OPUS KLASSIK AWARD 2021

Final Awards Night, 10 October, 2021

“A noted polymath, musician, and historian, Michelle Castelletti explains her process and rationale in undertaking the arrangement of this exceptional work: The issue of re-orchestration has been a long-discussed debate amongst music scholars and performing musicians. My work relates to, and complements, existing musicological studies, as well as several reconstructions for full orchestra that have been made of Mahler’s last symphony. Read her extended statement here.
